The hype continues: Obama spokeswoman says Julian Castro embodies the … – Houston Chronicle (blog)

No pressure.

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro is the keynote speaker tonight at the Democratic National Convention, the same role that propelled Illinois state Sen. Barack Obama to national fame (and higher office) eight years ago. The same role that made Texans Barbara Jordan and Ann Richards into Democratic Party heroes from Schenectady to San Antonio.

Oh, all the national networks will be covered the speech live, with a TV audience in the tens of millions.

No pressure?

As if the 37-year-old Texan needs anyone to raise expectations for his speech, now-President Obama’s campaign is putting out word that it’s going to be a blockbuster.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters today that Castro’s personal story of rising from humble roots to attain an Ivy League education and public office “reflects the president’s story and the American story — if you work hard, play by the rules, this is the land of the opportunity, you can get a fair shot and a fair shake.”

That’s the easy part of the speech. Personal stories can be compelling; Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan both told moving stories about their families at the Republican National Convention last week. The key for Castro is to deliver on substance — much like Obama’s 2004 speech that captivated Americans by saying that there is no red America or no blue America.

But Team Obama is letting it be known that Castro also will be called on to attack Romney (or should we say contrast Obama and Romney’s visions).

“Mayor Castro will talk about those values that define us and discuss the choice the American people face in the election between going forward and moving back,” Psaki said. ”We can invest in things like education, that was key to his success and critical to a strong middle class and growing economy, or we can provide additional tax cuts to millionaires and pay for it with tax increases on middle-class families while cutting education.”

No pressure?
